About Bhekula
Hiding away in a magnificent sand forest in northern KwaZulu-Natal, you will discover the gem that is Bhekula Nature Reserve. It is perfectly placed for you to enjoy relaxed walks through the pristine sand forest with clearly marked trails and endless opportunities to discover rarities and endemics that call Bhekula Nature Reserve, home.

The reserve is guaranteed to offer spectacular endemic wildlife experiences such as the elusive suni, delightful four-toed elephant shrews, and the Mozambique dwarf galago. Birders can look out for impressive endemic bird species like the plain-backed sunbird, pink-throated twinspot, Neergaard’s sunbird, and the reserve’s resident African broadbill.

If enjoying the local plants is what you’re after, then the towering Lebombo wattle and the beautiful flowering green apple will enchant you. Lepidopterists (butterfly lovers) will be entertained looking for the green forest nymph, the clear-winged Acraea, or possibly the animated Mozambique Acraea

Bhekula Nature Reserve as well as the Bhekula Lodge are managed in by WILDTRUST, a leading environmental NGO in partnership with Bhekula Community Trust, proudly supported by BMZ, Global Nature Fund, German Corporation and KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife.
The reserve is located just five minutes away from Tembe Elephant Park, famous for protecting the oldest wild elephant population of African elephants, boasting some of the largest tuskers in Africa.

45 minutes from Kosi mouth, Lake Sibaya, and the Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve

Bhekula Nature Reserve is an ideal base from which to explore Maputaland and southern Mozambique.
